We are wishing a Happy Birthday as Facebook turns 10 today! It’s been quite an incredible story for the social media networking site; starting out as a mere student project, to now having over 1.2billion users worldwide.

It was founded by Mark Zuckerberg who was a student at Harvard University and the 2004 project was originally called Thefacebook.com then changing over to just Facebook in 2005. Facebook was seen as a small competitor to other social media platform, MySpace; and overtook the company in 2009. Since then Facebook has continued to be the biggest and most popular social media site out there.

Facebook has continued to evolve in order to satisfy the needs of its users. Introducing such mechanisms like ‘Facebook chat’ and ‘Timeline’ helped to keep the website fresh and exciting. A major factor in its success was the evolution of its mobile apps with the majority of its users active on mobile.

The movie release of ‘The Social Network’ further increased the popularity of the website. The film was based on the story of Mark Zuckerberg and the creation of Facebook; including the lawsuit filed by the Winklevoss brothers. The 2010 film proved to be a great hit.

Of course Facebook moved away from just individual users by opening it up to ‘Business Pages’ giving users the option to ‘like’ various companies. Businesses advertise and appear in news feeds using all sorts of weird and wonderful eye-catching techniques to stand out from the competition. In December 2013, Facebook rolled out plans to allow video adverts to appear in news feeds, already playing the content.

Facebook and social media has a huge part to play for every business and their online marketing strategy. For advice and help regarding this contact us here at Colourmedia where we are more than happy to help you on your social media journey.
